PlaStrat – Strategies for the reduction of urban plastic emissions into limnic systems

The focus of the project is laid on the analysis and evaluation of diverse plastic species regarding chemical dynamics, degradation, leaching as well as adsorption and desorption of contaminants in long-term exposure scenarios including different wastewater treatment steps. Our department contributes to the project by evaluating the effects of differently degraded plastic materials and their additives on freshwater organisms. To this end, we assess the impact of microplastic particles by evaluating their toxic properties in in-vitro bioassays and by assessing their effects on freshwater organisms in chronic biotests.

Furthermore, there is a focus on the quantification and technical possibilities to reduce plastic emissions in the area of sanitary engineering and environmental technology including wastewater and digestate treatment.

The overarching objective of the project is the development of sustainable strategies to reduce plastic emissions and thus decrease plastic residues in the aquatic environment.
