Vertebrate Genomics
It was the ultimate dream of Mendel,
Flemming, Darwin, Morgan, Boveri, Sutton, Avery Dobzhanski, Haldane, Chargaff,
Watson and many other heroes on whose shoulders we stand, to be able to
sequence, assemble and annotate the ultimate information about an organism.
Everything that makes a tree, a toad, a tiger, or you is encoded in its genome.
Everything.
Now imagine for a moment that you had the
power to sequence a genome and unlock one of nature's deepest and best-kept
secrets. But remember, with great power comes great responsibility.
Interested?
Then you need to join our Vertebrate Genomics Master Module. In just seven weeks you will learn how to:
- isolate DNA suitable for genome
sequencing
- prepare the DNA to be loaded onto a
marvel of modern technology, a Next Generation Sequencer
- handle UNIX and scripting
- assemble and annotate a de novo genome from scratch, and then
- process and analyze more data than you
could ever read in a thousand lifetimes.
Afraid of computers? Don't be. A crash
course will teach you everything you need to know to turn that silly piece of
plastic, silicon and metal into your own personal servant. It will do what you
want it to do and not you reacting to audio-visual input. You will get your first
taste of diving into the exciting world of the evolutionary mysteries of an
organism, learning all about its present (genomic diversity), past (phylogeny)
and future (gene defects). But be warned: once you've tasted the forbidden
fruit, there's no turning back.
Still not enough? Then join the team of
comrades and write a scientific publication about the new genome assembly, a
peer-reviewed publication with your name on it. Yes, you heard right, if you
are a team-player, you will get the chance to have your first scientific
publication.
