June 2017 – September 2017: "Functional studies on the role of Polo-like Kinases in Cancer cells"  Polo-like kinases play an essential role in the progression and regulation of the cell cycle and proliferation. PLK1 is found to be upregulated in tumour cells and is a popular drug target when it comes to combat cancer. PLK3 on the other hand, seems to play an antagonistic role and is linked to activation of the tumour suppressor p53. To further understand the characteristics of PLK1 and PLK3, I performed FRET based assays to analyse possible protein-protein interactions between PLK1 molecules, as well as created a knock-in tag in PLK3 utilizing the CRISPR-Cas9 system.

Tissue engineering and organogenesis; my goal is to later work in a field that utilizes tissue regeneration with medical applications.

During my bachelor thesis I worked on the development of vertebrates during embryogenesis using the zebrafish model. The development of organisms from the single cell stage to a complex organism consisting of a variety of differentiated cells has always fascinated me. To better observe and analyze these processes, I hope to gain appropriate skills in microscopy and live cell imaging during the program. Moreover, I am looking forward to learn different kinds of experimental techniques, not only in the field of molecular biology, to be able to solve scientific questions from different kind of views.

Bachelor thesis: I investigated the metabolic activity of mitochondria as well as the phosphorylation status of Calcium/calmodulin protein kinase II (CaMKII), both under condition of rest and activation in the pinched-off presynaptic terminals of hippocampal nerve cells of mice. Both, phosphorylated CaMKII and mitochondrial activity contribute to essential presynaptic processes associated with the potentiation of the strength of hippocampal synapses in terms of the processing and consolidation of declarative memory in the mammalian brain.

Scientific interests / goals
I am mainly interested in the functional and dynamic interactions among nerve cells as well as the interactions between nerve cells and glial cells. I want to learn more about the development and functionality of these highly complex networks, the underlying signaling pathways and how they ultimately cause cognitive abilities like perception and learning.

"Systematic evaluation of usability of a cell-free protein expression system derived from BY-2 tobacco cell culture". The thesis focused on the critical steps of lysate preparation for cell-free synthesis. The aim of this study was to establish a system, which allows the rapid preparation of lysates for cell-free synthesis with satisfactory recombinant protein yields for research purposes in the working group.
My practical experience also includes an internship at DECHEMA , where I worked under Dr. F. Mayer in the department of Industrial Biotechnology. The topic of interest was the microbial electro-synthesis, generation and use of electrical energy in future microbial production processes with microbial fuel cells. My work consisted of testing the different redox-mediators with electrochemical measurement using cyclic voltammetry.
My latest work experience was an internship at Bayer AG, Research & Development, Crop Science Division, in the Safener Biology group in Frankfurt. I got the chance to work with experienced people in routine herbicide safener screening and I learned more about the topic of herbicides and the problem of herbicide resistance.
